Alcohol Soapbox

No Alcohol
Let me warn you I am on a soapbox. One that is very near and dear to my heart. I am very anti-alcoholic beverage. I have been convicted by God that it is a sin for me to drink. I realize some people have not been convicted by this. I do think that there are definite scriptures telling us to not drink alcohol. I think that many Christians lose their witness over this.
The subject was brought up this week in our Sunday School Class and our teacher does not have a problem with "social" drinking and doesn't see where it is addressed negatively biblically. He knows how Al and I feel on the subject and he looked at Al to see his response and Al stated that he could teach a whole lesson on it. It seems to be another one of those places where my beliefs offend others. Al and I are convicted that drinking alcohol would be a sin for us. We are not perfect we used to drink socially. We do commit sins, we are flesh. We will not knowingly, willingly, commit a sin that we have been convicted that it is a sin.
I looked Monday for some comments on the Internet and found alot of interesting articles. My favorite is a quote by Dr. Adrian Rodgers that states:
“These Scriptures tell us, I believe plainly and clearly, that the Christian position so far as beverage alcohol is concerned is total abstinence. The Bible says we are not to look upon it, we are not to desire it when it is fermented. Southern Baptists meeting in session have called their brothers and sisters to live “an exemplary Christian lifestyle of abstinence from beverage alcohol and all other harmful drugs” (1984); to recognize alcohol as “America’s number one drug problem” (1982); to “reaffirm our historic position as opposing alcohol as a beverage” (1978); to view “personal abstinence” as the “Christian way” (1957); to express their “unceasing opposition to the manufacture, sale and use of alcoholic beverages” (1955); to realize alcohol is a “habit-forming and destructive poison” (1940) and the “chief source of vice, crime, poverty and degradation” (1936); and to “reassert our truce less and uncompromising hostility to the manufacture, sale, importation and transportation of alcoholic beverages” (1896).
Over the last two decades, the attitude of some Southern Baptists toward alcohol use has moderated, however. This is especially true among younger adult Southern Baptists. No doubt many factors have contributed to this shift. Greater social acceptance of drinking, very little preaching on the “evils of alcohol,” a more secularized church community, and a growing attitude of independence among church members have all contributed in various ways. A preacher that I thought very highly of told me this week that you just don't preach on those "hot" topics, if it is in the text of a message he intends to give, he shifts the focus off of that part because "people don't want to hear it."

When one considers the high cost of alcohol abuse to individuals, families, and society, it is surprising that some Southern Baptists insist on their right to drink. Alcohol problems cost American society more than $184 billion per year in health care, criminal justice, social services, property damage, and loss of productivity expenses. Alcohol is a factor in as many as 105,000 deaths annually in the United States and a primary contributor to a wide array of health problems and human suffering. These include various cancers, liver disease, alcoholism, brain disorders, motor vehicle crashes, violence, crime, spousal and child abuse, drowning, and suicides. Even those who are able to control their drinking should recognize that they are engaged in a behavior that is destroying millions of lives, and choose to abstain rather than encourage by their behavior someone to drink who will not be able to control his drinking. Al and I have numerous alcoholics in our families and we have seen the prices paid by these individuals and their families. Illness, jobs,
social issues, divorce, death, and even suicide. We believe that the addictive personality is a genetic trait and we have taught our children that one way to avoid alcoholism is to not take that first drink!

In modern American society, the human toll taken by alcohol abuse is staggering. According to a recent USA Today/HBO poll, 20 percent of Americans indicated they “had an immediate relative who at some point had been addicted to alcohol or drugs.” The article, in the July 20, 2006 issue of USA Today notes, “That translates into roughly 40 million American adults with a spouse, parent, sibling or child battling addiction.”

I believe that Alcohol is a LEGAL drug. I know it is in some medicines and I do not have a problem with that. I do NOT believe in self-medicating, however. If you have a problem in your life you need to deal with it or find help. I don't believe you should drink because it "tastes good." There are many other drinks that taste better.

The USA Today article quotes Sis Wenger, executive director of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics, as saying, “For every person who’s alcoholic or dependent on other drugs, there are at least four or five people hurt on a regular basis.”
Of course, one must be careful when speaking to the issue of alcohol consumption. After all, many medicines contain alcohol. One can find it in fairly high percentages in cough syrup, for example. Compared to beverage alcohol, some over-the-counter nighttime cold syrups are more than fifty proof. That’s a fairly high alcohol content, higher than beer and wine. As far as we know, no one would consider it sinful or inappropriate if someone drank these medications to help cope with the symptoms of a cold or flu.

What is of concern when it comes to alcohol consumption, however, is its recreational/social use. While about 60 percent of the United States population drinks alcohol recreationally/socially, the historic Southern Baptist attitude has been opposed to this use of alcohol. What the last Southern Baptist Convention meeting revealed, however, is that this is changing, at least among a vocal minority of church pastoral leadership. No one has a firm statistic on just how many Southern Baptists drink alcohol recreationally/socially, but most of those who have been paying attention know that some Southern Baptists drink alcoholic beverages at least occasionally. To date, this attitude has not flowed very far into the ranks of the pastoral staff. Most pastoral staff still do not drink alcoholic beverages.

Because alcohol is such a dangerous substance, and because attitudes toward alcohol use appear to be changing among some Southern Baptists, it is necessary to be reminded of the Scriptural teaching on the issue. Both the Old and New Testaments speak of alcoholic beverages, and they use many words to refer to them.
In the Old Testament, one finds at least eight words that refer to the juice of the grape and a couple words that refer to beverages with higher alcohol content, often translated as “strong drink” or “liquor.” Practically all of the uses of these words speak of alcoholic beverages in a negative context. However, it appears that the negative aspect is principally related to the debilitating effects on people, not on the alcoholic beverage in itself. Alcohol as a substance is not evil. For example, Psalm 104:14-15 speaks of wine, “which makes man’s heart glad,” as one of God’s provisions for man. Wine is often mentioned as one of the ingredients used in offerings to God (see Ex. 29:40). Even sweet wine, which is thought by many to be mere grape juice, can debilitate (see Hos. 4:11), yet Joel 3:18, speaking of the day when God restores Judah, says “the mountains will drip with sweet wine.” The same can be said for the Hebrew word translated “strong drink.”
While there does not appear to be any positive reference to people drinking “strong drink,” it was used in drink offerings to the Lord, which certainly suggests that it was not an “evil” substance (see Num. 28:7, and Dt. 14:26, where the word is certainly used in the context of purchasing offering items).

The New Testament has a more limited vocabulary to refer to alcoholic beverages. The principal Greek word (“oinos”), translated “wine,” is used more than thirty times. When used in its non-metaphorical sense, it appears to run the full gamut of meanings, from grape juice, usually qualified by the adjective “new,” to the fully fermented alcoholic beverage. While it is common knowledge that people drank beverages containing alcohol in the early days of the church, the New Testament is not nearly as accommodating of the practice. In fact, except for the handful of references in the Gospels that speak of wine, (Jesus’ lesson about new wine and wineskins, Mt. 9:17; Mk. 2:22; Lk. 5:37-38; John the Baptist, Lk. 1:15; 7:33; medicinal use rejected by Jesus, Mr. 15:23; Lk. 10:34; and the wedding feast at Cana, Jn. 2:3, 9, 10; 4:46), and the neutral and metaphorical references in Revelation (wine spared destruction, Rev. 6:6; wine as a metaphor for wrath, Rev. 14:8, 10; 16:19; 17:2; 18:3; and as a commercial product, Rev. 18:13), one encounters only negative statements about the non-medicinal use of alcoholic beverages. In Acts 2:13 the observers supposed that the apostles were full of “sweet wine” because of their behavior when the Holy Spirit had filled them. Except for one reference to its medicinal use (1 Tim. 5:23), all of the remaining references, to the actual fermented juice of the grape are warnings or prohibitions to its use or abuse, (see Rom. 14:21; Eph. 5:18; 1 Tim. 3:3, 8; Titus 1:7; 2:3). In addition, the New Testament calls Christians to sobriety, which while not alluding solely to the issue of alcohol abuse certainly includes it (1 Thess. 5:1-11), and to lifestyles contrary to those of the debauched culture (Lk. 21:34-36; Rom. 13:12-14; Gal. 5:19-24; 1 Pet. 4:1-6).

While the use by some biblical characters of alcoholic beverages is undeniable, it is important to note that the beverages these men and women consumed were not the kinds of alcoholic beverages people consume today. The alcohol content of beverages referred to in the Bible was considerably lower than many of today’s alcoholic beverages. Additionally, we must keep in mind that sanitary conditions were not what they are today. Alcohol provided an ideal way to maintain the potability of beverages. Without it, people would have suffered even more from common parasites and other health threatening ailments resulting from ingesting contaminated water (see 1 Tim. 5:23).

Even so, one could certainly still overdo it when drinking these beverages, and unfortunately, some biblical characters did on occasion. It is important to note that when they did, the Bible seldom had anything positive to say about it. Indeed, their drunkenness usually resulted in inappropriate behavior, which was subsequently denounced by the biblical writer. Just consider the Bible’s depictions and negative view of the drunken behavior of Noah (Gen. 9:20-27), Lot (Gen. 19:30-38), and Xerxes I (Est. 1:10-11).

When one wants to find a positive picture of alcohol in the Bible, one must look at it from a much different angle—the angle of abstinence. Those among Israel who chose to dedicate themselves in service to the Lord in a special way actually abstained from drinking alcohol as part of their commitment. These people were called Nazirites (Num. 6:1-21), and they were cherished by the Lord for their commitment. While Samson’s life was tragic in many ways, he was a Nazirite. He is the only judge whose birth was announced by the angel of the Lord, who instructed Manoah and his wife to raise Samson as a Nazirite (Jud. 13:1-25). Those who coaxed Nazirites to break their vows by drinking wine were condemned by God (see Amos 2:11-12).

Of course, not everyone who was committed to serving the Lord was a Nazirite, and no doubt, some of these others drank beverages containing alcohol. As we have noted, on many occasions it would have been very difficult not to do so, simply because the means to maintaining a healthy level of hydration required drinking beverages that contained at least trace amounts of alcohol. It certainly appears that Jesus was not a Nazirite, and that there were times when the beverage placed before Him probably contained alcohol. Indeed, Jesus appears to draw attention to this when He distinguished Himself from John the Baptist. In Mathew 11:18-19, He said, “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard.’”
Before anyone decides to use Jesus as his excuse to drink alcohol, however, it is crucial to note that the term “drunkard” was used by His enemies in an attempt to discredit Him. He does not admit to ever being drunk in this passage. He does seem, however, to indicate that he did not totally abstain from beverages that had any alcohol content as well as engaging in other activities contrary to John’s practices, like socializing with various groups of “unacceptable” people. Jesus wasn’t engaged in drinking alcoholic beverages because He felt it was His right to do so, He was doing this to make a point—that the unbelieving just looked for excuses not to believe.

People often refer to Jesus’ miracle at the wedding feast at Cana as evidence that he approved of alcohol consumption (Jn. 2:1-11). We must note several important features, however. First, we cannot be positive that what Jesus created had alcoholic content. The headwaiter may have been commenting on how good the wine tasted not about its alcohol content. Second, John tells us that Jesus performed this miracle as a “sign” (Jn. 2:11). He intended that those who witnessed this would see a spiritual significance in the miracle, not focus on the wine. In other words, He created the wine for another purpose, a much more important purpose than merely to provide the wedding guests with something to drink. Third, the text never says that Jesus drank any of this wine. Considering the Bible’s very negative attitude toward drunkenness and Jesus’ dedication to God, it is inconceivable to us that Jesus ever drank alcohol recreationally or that He was ever drunk.

It is obvious that one can find instances in the Bible when people drank alcoholic beverages. While most of these examples are negative, some clearly are not. Nevertheless, when one examines the full counsel of Scripture regarding alcohol use, there is little doubt that it warns against its use and unequivocally condemns its abuse. Some Bible passages warn against drinking any alcoholic beverages because of their debilitating effects (Prov. 23:29-35). Others instruct against the use of alcohol by those in positions of authority (Prov. 31:4-5). They require sobriety of church leadership (1 Tim. 3:3, 8; Titus 1:6), and drunkenness is always condemned (Isa. 5:11, 22; 28:7). In fact, there appears to be a clear movement in Scripture toward a rejection of alcohol use. We pointed out earlier that the Old Testament had more positive references to alcohol use than the New Testament. This could be evidence that the Bible’s principles were gradually undermining the practice of alcohol consumption, much in the same way that biblical principles eventually undermined the practice of enslaving people.

With this said, the Bible does not condemn all uses of alcohol. It recognizes its medicinal value. Proverbs 31:6-7 instructs the king to “give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to him whose life is bitter. Let him drink and forget his poverty and remember his trouble no more.” The Apostle Paul perpetuated the use of alcohol for medicinal purposes. He instructed Timothy to “use a little wine” for his stomach ailments (1 Tim. 5:23). This apostolic advice to Timothy could well indicate that Timothy was a total abstainer and that Paul had to urge his reluctant son in the faith to consume wine with alcohol for health purposes.

In a time when medicines were very rare, alcohol was one of the few medicinal aids available to assist the human condition. Today we have many more effective means for dealing with various physical and mental afflictions, means that do not have the potential to cause the kinds of significant damage alcohol causes. These positive references to alcohol consumption for medical purposes tell us that the mere consumption of alcohol in itself is not a sin. If it were, then these passages would be instructing people to sin. What is clear in these passages, however, is that there is no hint that one can use alcohol for recreational/social purposes.

Those who cannot find chapter and verse to justify consuming alcohol still argue that their freedom in Christ enables them to imbibe. It is certainly true that Christians are no longer under the condemnation of the Law. They no longer must follow rules and regulations in order to please God. But the freedom that Christians enjoy is not the same as license. The Christian must weigh his freedom against his responsibility in order to determine the appropriateness of certain behaviors. When considered from this perspective, it seems very clear that there are overwhelming reasons for abstaining from the consumption of beverage alcohol. Three principal reasons for this self-restraint are witness to the lost, service to the saved, and the appropriate treatment of the body.

As a matter of witness, it is preferable that a Christian not do anything that would hinder his witness to others. While some have argued that they find greater acceptance among a certain subset of the population because they drink with them, this is not the case for the vast majority of people who need to be reached with the Gospel. In fact, many lost people have certain expectations of Christians, and one is that they do not drink. Many of the lost recognize this as a distinguishing feature between Christians who are serious about their faith and those outside of the faith. Furthermore, victims of alcohol-related crimes could be deeply offended by someone who is supposedly concerned about people’s welfare engaging in an activity that has been so harmful to them.

This principle of witness is especially apt in today’s culture. Alcohol abuse is taking a staggering toll on millions of people and their families. It is inconceivable that one’s concept of Christian freedom could include the freedom to engage in any behavior that has become so devastating to millions of those in and outside of the church.

The Christian must also keep in mind how the example of his own lifestyle influences others. This can be understood as the servant principle. The Christian is a servant of all. He should consider how he best serves others by his behavior, not how he can live his own life without regard to others. The controlling principle here is that of the weaker brother. Paul counsels Christians to refrain from any activity, including eating and drinking, that may encourage another to engage in activity that will end up leading to feelings of guilt in the weaker brother (Rom. 14:13-23). He instructs Christians to pursue those things that edify others (1 Cor. 10:23; 14:26).

We disagree with those who say they can drink alcoholic beverages in the privacy of their own homes because they are not influencing anyone to follow their example. Parents, for example, must understand that their children will likely follow their example. It is a fact that the teenage children of parents who drink alcohol are more likely to experiment with alcohol than the teenage children of parents who abstain from alcohol consumption. It is just nearly impossible to engage in this activity unobserved by someone. We believe it would be tragic if someone were encouraged to engage in a behavior that destroyed their lives because of the example of someone they trusted.

In addition, the servant principle should lead those in leadership to abstain from alcohol use. In Proverbs 31:4-5 the king is counseled not to drink alcoholic beverages because it will cloud his judgment. It is also imperative that those responsible for leadership be available at all times for those in need. It would be a terrible disservice if a family had just experienced some tragic loss, and their pastor could not offer the spiritual counsel and support they needed because he had to sober up first.

The third principle applies to the appropriate treatment of the body. God created the human body. That in itself should be sufficient reason to abstain from alcohol use. But the Christian has another important reason for abstaining from alcohol. Paul taught that the Christian’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It houses God Himself (1 Cor. 6:19-20). Consequently, whatever we do to our bodies affects directly the dwelling of God. Out of respect for God the Christian should do all he can to engage only in activity that honors and strengthens his body. His body and mind should be available to the indwelling Holy Spirit at any time and should be under the Spirit’s control, not that of alcohol (Eph. 5:18).

We understand that this argument can be made about many behaviors, overeating, for example. Of course, one cannot stop eating because someone might be encouraged to eat too much or to eat foods that are not healthy for them. People have to eat, but they don’t have to drink alcohol. Alcohol consumption is purely a lifestyle choice. It is not a necessary part of one’s life, like eating. Furthermore, the arguments made by some that they drink wine for their health is not supported by science. The health benefit comes from the grape, not the alcohol. All one must do to get this benefit is drink grape juice.

In conclusion, we offer five general principles that the Christian would do well to follow when he is making a decision about alcohol use or any other activity. First, Christians are not free to do anything they please. They belong to Christ and should make every effort to engage in behavior that honors His Lordship over their lives. Second, selfishness should be shunned. Selfishness is the root of all sin. It leads people to seek their own interests, even to the detriment of others. Third, sacrifice is a Christian virtue. Jesus provides the supreme example of this. He recognized the human need for forgiveness and willingly gave up His rightful place in heaven, took on human flesh, and sacrificed His life on the cross for the sake of others. Fourth, God’s glory is the most important concern for Christians. With every activity, the Christian should ask whether or not God will be glorified. Finally, the Christian must remember that he will be judged for his every deed, both those that affect his own life and those that affect the lives of others. Every Christian should live to hear his Lord declare, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” on the day of judgment.

The Mind of a Child

My grandson is 4 years old today. This has me thinking about all of the wonderful stuff that he said was going to happen when he turned 4. He will no longer be afraid of the characters at Disneyworld, he will be able to pick us up and hold us, instead of us holding him. He will be able to ride roller coasters! It is no wonder that God tells us to come to Him as little children. There is nothing like the wonder and pure heart of a child. Children love us and trust us unconditionally. They know that we will not (on purpose) fail them. Our Heavenly Father wants us to look upon Him in the same way. Put all of our faith and trust in Him alone.

We enjoyed a great party and visit with our babies. They are growing up so fast! I know when you are in the midst of parenting it doesn't seem like it happens fast but it does! Old people used to tell me that and now I am the old people. I remember thinking, if she'll just sleep through the night....,if she just starts to walk on her own.....,when she starts school....,when she learns to drive.....
I read something that I think is very pertinent to young mothers:

"Moms, you've got to have you a support group of other moms. Many who are peers. Others who are just ahead of you. They will be used of God to get you through everything from the mundane to the morose.
As I told my class last night, our ancient female ancestors walked to wells and rivers together to get water. Our great grandmothers quilted and canned together. We, instead, are imprisoned in our minivans driving breakneck speed, thinking a few maniacal minutes on a cell phone can replace a regular play-date where believing moms can take some time to laugh and share. I don't think it's a luxury. It's a necessity for mental (and often spiritual!) health! Because, you see,...

*No day full of dirty diapers has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No tantrum has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No "but, Mom, everybody is going!" has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No "You hate me!" has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No child's first love has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No child's first broken heart has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No broken curfew has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.
*No goodbye has overtaken you but such as is common to moms.

About five years ago, my buddy Johnnie's oldest son, Jeremy, was just about to vow his life to the woman of his dreams. The music was already playing in the sanctuary and we were only about three minutes from the service starting. We looked around and suddenly realized that it was just the six of us left in the choir room: Johnnie, her two boys, and me and my two girls. The four kids were all beautiful, God-loving young adults. Johnnie and I had lived through it and they'd lived through us. Wow, Lord. The groomsmen had already gone to their posts and it was just about time for Jeremy to take his place through a sanctuary door down a long hall. Had we tried to manipulate a few moments alone between the six of us, we could never have pulled it off. It was a gift from God. The completely unplanned moment was not lost on a single one of us six and even now I could cry about the tenderness of it. Without anyone saying a word, Jeremy held out his arm for one of my daughters. Jordan held out his arm for the other. And Johnnie held out her arm to me. Arm in arm, three familiar pairs of us walked the long hall, laughing, and nearly crying, making our way toward the finish line of young family-hood just like we began: together. Those kinds of relationships don't take place in five minutes. They take years. Crises. Prayers. Divine favor. Your fellow moms are some of the most priceless treasures God has bestowed on you to cheer you on your way to the finish line of young parenting. Grab some arms and do it together."

I don't know who wrote this but it so true. I was very pleased to look around at my Starshine's birthday party and see other adults there that I knew cared about him. A support group is necessary. A loving, Christian, extended family.

Alanna goes to the doctor on Friday, please pray for her health and the health of her baby. Her baby stays up all night now...I wonder what will happen when she is born???

Please Vote on Survey at the bottom of the Page


I added a survey because I was curious as to how all of you felt. It seems if we pray in public, say Merry Christmas, or sometimes just exist it offends others. This is the way radio host Paul Harvey put it:

Paul Harvey says: - "I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don't agree with Darwin, but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his theory of evolution. Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game.

So what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire book of Acts They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game.

"But it's a Christian prayer," some will argue. Yes, and this is the United States of America, a country founded on Christian principles. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect-somebody chanting Hare Krishna? If I went to a football game in Jerusalem, I would expect to hear Jewish prayer. If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad, I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer. If I went to a ping pong match in China, I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha. And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit. When in Rome...

"But what about the atheists?" is another argument. What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized.. We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds.. If that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand. Call your lawyer! Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations.

Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying. God, help us. And if that last sentence offends you, well..........just sue me.

The silent majority has been silent too long.. it's time we let that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard, that the vast majority don't care what they want.. it is time the majority rules! It's time we tell them, you don't have to pray.. you don't have to say the pledge of allegiance, you don't have to believe in God or attend services that honor Him. That is your right, and we will honor your right.., but by golly, you are no longer going to take our rights away.. we are fighting back.. and we WILL WIN!

God bless us one and all, especially those who denounce Him...

God bless America, despite all her faults, she is still the greatest nation of all.....

God bless our service men who are fighting to protect our right to pray and worship God...

May 2005 (2007)be the year the silent majority is heard and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions.

I agree with his statement I put 2007 in parenthesis realizing it didn't happen in 2005 when he made this statement. I want my grandchildren to grow up in a country where they can be proud of their faith and their morals. People wonder what happened to morals in our young people and I think we need only to look in the mirror to see what has happened. We no longer follow God's laws, we use shades of gray instead of black and white. Do parents/grandparents think that their children don't hear them lie or stretch the truth (same as lying). Do people not realize the morals of our media and entertainment? We are teaching them alternative lifestyles, lie rather than offend, accept other ideas instead of seeing how these ideas line up with God's Word...
THE NEW SCHOOL PRAYER
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.

We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,

It's "inappropriate" to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such "judgments" do not belong.
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take! Amen !
I probably need to get off of my soapbox for the morning.

Katrina and Hurricanes


I can't believe how fast summer is flying by. It seems as though it just began and it is half over. I know Alanna and Fay probably think time isn't moving fast enough (they are pregnant) trust me it is flying. We are almost in Mid-July and Hurricane Prescaredness starts for me in August and ends in November. My granddaughter's birth does have me looking forward to October though.


I read a poem (?) about Hurricane Katrina that I thought was funny, and not much about Hurricanes is funny so I'll put this here very light-heartedly.


'Twas the Night Before Katrina (cajun style)


'Twas de night before Katrina, when all tru da state

Not a gas pump was pumpin',
Not a store open late

All da plywood was hung,

on de windows wit care,
Knowing dat a hurricane,

Soon would be dere.
Da chilren were ready wit deir flashlight in hand
While rain bands from da hurricane covered over our lan
And Mom wit her Mag-lite,

and me wit my cap
Has jus filled da battub for flushing our ____...
When out on de lawn, there arose such a clatter
I sprang from da closet to see what was de matter
The trees on da terrace, and de neighbor's roof torn,
We feared we'd be dyin' in dis terrible storm.

Wit a little wind gus, so lively and quick,
I membered quite clearly our walls was not brick
More rapid than Eagles, her courses they changed!

And she whistled and wafted and surged all the same.

Off shingles!

Off sidings!

Off rooftops!

Off power!

Down trees!

Down fences!

Down trailers!

Down towers!

On da street of New Orleans,

she continued to maul,
Screaming Blow away! Blow away! Blow away all!

As da wind ripped and tossed da debris tru de sky,

So go to the attic my family did do,

With a portable radio and some batteries too.

And den in a twinkling, I heard on da set,
The end was not coming for a few hours yet!

As I calmed down da kids and was turning around
Tru de window it came with a huge crashing sound

A tree branch it was all covered in soot
De wind blew it smack-dab on top of my foot!

A bundle of twigs now lay in a stack

And my Livin' Room looked like it was under attack.
De wind how it howled,

de storm very scary,
Myself and my family were all too unwary.

Da dangers of hurricanes are serious ya know,
Dey are taken for granted as Betsy did show.
Wit da winds dying down and da danger beneath,
I noticed my tool shed was missing its sheath
So I grabbed my last tarp, and nailed it on down,
Den I got in my car and drove into town.
Da traffic was awful and stores had no ice,
My 5-gallon cooler would have to suffice
Generators was scarce, not one left in town,

Dere was trees on the roads and power lines down.

FEMA was ready wit people to work,

Electrical companies came in from New York.

I sprang to da car, and gave my family a whistle,
Den away we all went like a Tomahawk missile!
You could hear us exclaim as we drove out of sight,
"The heck wit dis place, Texas seem just right!"

Al and I went to Texas for the storm and stayed there about a week. Everyone we encountered from shopping to Doctors to Drugstores to Churches were all very kind and helpful. Our daughter in Florida said that her state was showing it's hospitality to stranded evacuees also. We also received alot of help and supplies from family and friends who lived elsewhere during the storm. You know who you are....Thank You. God used all of you to supply our needs when it was impossible for us to purchase our own supplies.

To those of you who are keeping up with our church, please be in prayer this Sunday July 15, as we will be electing a Pastor Search Committee. I know that God already knows who is coming to pastor our church. This committee is a very important part of God's plan. Please pray as we select them and continue to pray for our church and staff as we go through this transitional time.


My Mom started her latest round of Chemo Monday. I spoke with her a little while ago and she is doing well. She has not had nausea yet but her joints are hurting. They had to give her something (shots in the stomach), because her white blood cell count drops with the chemo (this is expected). She said it hurts to walk (because of whatever they give her for white blood cells) but she will be fine. She has a wonderful "fighting" attitude right now. She is willing to go through this fire to come out on the other side. She has 2 more rounds of Chemo scheduled. She can only take it 1 day every 3 weeks. It is some tough stuff.


My Sunshine went to her allergist this week and has NO food allergies. Thank you Jesus! I am so excited for her. Her parents have been keeping her off of peanuts in case they have been partially responsible for her eczema but they are NOT!!! My girl had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich today!!!!


Starshine will be turning 4 on the 25 of this month so we are getting ready for a party!! Knights of the Round Table is his theme. I know we will all have a great time. I think he likes his "friends" more than presents. I must admit that doesn't come from my side of the family. We love the presents.


My Puddin' is growing right before our eyes. She loves my glasses and sunglasses. I didn't relize they were flavored until she began puuting them in her mouth. She is also becoming very adept at taking the earring out of my right ear and dropping it somewhere. Such Talent.


I don't know if Fay's baby has a name yet but Alanna's does not. I am still calling her Lilac, just because I need to call her something. I can't wait until she gets in the mix with the others.

Happy 71 Birthday Dad

Today is my Dad's 71st birthday. Please continue to pray for him as this has been a year of changes. He has gone from the "man of the house" to the caregiver/nurse of the one he loves. My parents have been married for 54 years and are inseperable. They got married when she was 15 and he was 16. This song of Mark Schultz's reminds me of them.

As you already know my Mom was diagnosed with supraglottic larnyx cancer (throat). 2007 has changed their lives, but with God's grace they will be ok. We just found out last week that she has had some metasis in her lymph nodes so please continue to pray for them. She begins another round of chemo (this time in Mobile) this week. Their newest granddaughter Hadyn Noelle will be baptized Sunday, she brings them great joy..........and probably sleepless nights.

Please continue to pray for them, my friends Michelle and Hoppa and Sunshine and Baby Traylor.

Happy July Fourth!!

I thought I would be somewhat lighthearted today to celebrate the Fourth.

This is for my friends and relatives in Alabama, I think it pretty much applies to Louisiana too.



YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN ALABAMA IN JULY WHEN. . .



-The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.

-The trees are whistling for the dogs.

-The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.

-Hot water now comes out of both taps.

-You can make sun tea instantly.

-You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.

-The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.

-You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.

-You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window. (This has happened to me many times)

-You actually burn your hand opening the car door.

-You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.

-You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

-The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out

and add butter, salt and pepper.

-Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.

-Ah, what a place to call home.

July

Today is Monday, July 2. I don't know if I will finish this today so I am giving myself a time reference. It is a beautiful day...truly a gift from God....blue skies, birds singing, etc. Please pray for the people in Texas and Kansas that are having their homes and lives flooded right now.

This past week was quite a week. Al and I went to Memphis so that I could receive Medical Care. We went Sunday after church because I had a Monday morning appointment. On Monday morning we received a phone call from our Sunday School teacher that our friend, Dan Aycock, had begun bleeding from his hip surgery that he had a week ago. We were alarmed and began praying for him, his wife, and family. Within fifteen minutes we received another phone call that it was over. Dan was now with our Lord. Dan and Michelle are a wonderful couple whose love for each other and Christ can be visibly seen. Please pray for our friend Michelle as she goes through this new time learning to adjust to life without Dan. Their love was so evident, it was a blessing to all who know them. Dan's walk with our Lord was easily seen in the way he lived his life. Dan...we will miss you!

On the medical front, I do believe I received relief! God has blessed me with a wonderful 83 year old doctor. Dr. John Shea. He is a christian who developed a procedure that seems to relieve my ear and balance problems. I am now recovering and on phone restriction so that the pressure does not build up in my ear to quickly. Dr. Shea describes my condition to "glaucoma" of the ear. The pressure builds up and everything goes haywire. God has used Dr. Shea to give me hope that I can have a "normal" life. It may take repeated treatments and steroids but God already knows that. I feel like I have my life back!

Yesterday was our Pastor's last Sunday at our church. It was a wonderful day in the Lord. My compliments to the hostess committee. They served hundreds quickly and efficiently. The food was delicious. Our Worship Choir and Youth Choir sang beautifully. Bro. Jake used scripture from 1 Tim. 2.
First Timothy is one of three pastoral letters (including 2 Timothy and Titus) that the aging apostle Paul sent to those who would continue his work. Timothy was, in every way, Paul's spiritual son. Young but gifted, Timothy had been assigned to lead the church at Ephesus. Paul's letter, likely written about a.d. 62–66, counseled the young man on matters of church leadership—from proper worship, to qualifications for overseers (elders) and deacons, to advice on confronting false teaching and how to treat various individuals within a congregation. Paul charged Timothy to live a life beyond reproach, giving believers a standard to emulate.

My Mom had some lab work come back that she still has some "spotty" malignancies on 7 remaining lymph nodes in her throat. She will begin Chemotherapy in Mobile tomorrow. Please continue to pray for her as she battles this disease. She has been seeing God at work.

My Sunshine is still battling her eczema. Pray for her as the heat only makes it worse. She is such a trooper though. She is not a complainer. I don't think she realizes that other people don't have to deal with skin problems.

Alanna and child seem to be doing well. We have a 3D ultrasound scheduled in August. How Cool!! We were able to see hair fuzz on the last ultrasound so I am anxious to see what we can see on this one. I have also heard that my babies room is painted and bedding is being picked out. I think Alanna is registered at Target and Babies R Us if you are interested in looking. I had forgotten how much babies need. There is some cute new stuff now that wasn't invented when I had babies though.

Please pray for our youth choir as they are at camp in Orlando. They are a wonderful group of young Christians.
